Giving Thanks

As we travel to see our family or gather with our friends I think we should take a moment and remember why we spend this day feasting. All too often, in our modern society, we tend to forget that there is something deeper to this holiday. This is not a Christian, Jewish, or Hindu holiday; it is a day to give thanks for all we have, a time to remember the brave men and woman who traveled across an ocean to start a new life, and the people who helped them survive.

With the retail rush to get the Christmas decorations and gifts on the shelves, Thanksgiving is forgotten, relegated to a three foot section of paper plates and tablecloths. It saddens me that we roll from one retail holiday to another and forget what the reason is that we are here to celebrate.

America has a rich and not always glamorous history. Taking the time to talk to our kids about what happened, not the silly play they do at school but teaching them the real history, is key to passing on the importance of this seemingly minor holiday. People lost their lives so they could be free to practice whatever religion they choose. A native people were almost eradicated by strange germs and guns. We take too much for granted here in the United States. We try to clean up history to make it palatable, but we do a disservice to our children.

So this holiday, as you sit down to your meal, take time to remember the people who came before. Talk to your family about the history of this important holiday, and give a moment of thanks that we are free to be who we want because of the bravery and stupidity of our forefathers.
