The Season!

The holiday season has come, people are pushing and shoving at “Black Friday” sales. Trample your fellow shopper to get the last gift for the child at home that has a room full of toys they don't play with. I know I am not alone in my anger over what this season has become.

Thanksgiving is no longer a day to be thankful for what we have; it is now the day to look over the ads and plan our Black Friday strategy: who will hit what store, and do we have our list. What happened to enjoying dinner, a football game, family time, and a slice of pie.

We have become such a materialistic society that we no longer stop to enjoy just being with the ones we love. We have to rush and gather a huge pile of gifts for under our professionally decorated tree. We are so shallow dad no longer puts up the lights; he paid someone to deal with that, because they have to be perfect to look better than the neighbors'.

Our coordinated wrapping paper matches the tree just so, and each child has the same amount of amazing gifts. Count them once more, did we do better than last year? Will we have that moment of praise we are searching for? Will the love we want be filled with empty thank-you's from kids who will forget tomorrow what they received today?

How about going back to the REAL reason for the season? To celebrate the coming slumber of the earth. At what point do we stop and see what we have turned this holiday into? We have let retailers tell us we have to buy the newest and greatest toy every year.

This year make a gift for each member of your family. Have each child donate toys to the less privileged. Bring back home and hearth, celebrating what you have, and your ability to share that with your family. This is not about the newest game system or a bigger TV; it is about love and family and home. Celebrate charity, warmth, and friendship, not sales and perfection. You will survive if the decorations on the tree don't match the paper, and you just might enjoy letting the kids decorate the tree. Most of all remember to take a moment and enjoy the peaceful stillness of the coming winter nights.
